yeah!!! i was thinking about this more after i posted this and i realized how warm and nice this setting is. there's no hamfisted "we are definitely superior aliens to you so you should submit" vibes attributed to any species. they're just all people who are different. and the tool by which the two species communicate is empathy. trying to understand goes so, so far. and i know there's a lot of dialogue about how science fiction as a genre is a place where the author is trying to explore what Could be in this society. i dunno if that's necessarily true. but here, if it is, i feel like the vision of the future in this book is that humans could be happy, living like that. any human. every human. we could bridge the misunderstandings with good faith. we could be speaking our respective different languages and bridging the gap because we want to understand and, with time and experience, appreciate the happy lives others have.
